Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs both had terrific doubles careers alongside other players before starting an en exclusive and successful partnership with each other in 2009.
The Australians' first impressive results were a semifinal showing in Dubai and a quarterfinal appearance in Miami. The highlight of their clay court season was a semifinal run in Madrid. They really found their form on grass, reaching the final in Eastbourne and at Wimbledon, where they were the only team to give the Williams sisters a significant challenge. They continued to impress during the summer hardcourt season, reaching the quarters in Los Angeles, the final in Toronto and the semis of the US Open, where they extended doubles world No.1s Cara Black and Liezel Huber to three sets.

Stosur and Stubbs were the fourth and last team to qualify for Doha. They have both won the Tour Championships previously with other partners - Stosur with Lisa Raymond in 2005 and 2006 and Stubbs with Raymond in 2001.
"It's a privilege to make it to the Sony Ericsson Championships," Stubbs said. "I've qualified for the Championships many times with different partners, but this year it's extra special to be playing in Doha with a fellow Australian."
