Serena and Venus' Sony Ericsson WTA Tour doubles bio

Despite only playing in five tournaments, Serena and Venus Williams had the best doubles season they have ever had together in 2009, highlighted by four titles, including three Grand Slams.

The sisters got things rolling at their first event, the Australian Open, only dropping one set en route to their third career title in Melbourne. Next up was Roland Garros, where they suffered their only defeat of the year, falling in a third set tie-break in the round of 16 to Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Nadia Petrova. They recovered splendidly from that, as a couple weeks later they cruised through the draw at the All-England Club without dropping a set for their fourth Wimbledon title. Especially impressive was their 61 62 semifinal rout of doubles world No.1s Cara Black and Liezel Huber.

Next up was Stanford, where they once again did not lose a set en route to the Premier-level title, their first tournament victory at a non-Grand Slam or Olympics in 10 years. And sure enough they also captured their second US Open later in the summer, which was their 10th career major and 16th title overall. They were challenged a bit in New York, though, even losing a set in the semifinals, but in the final once again had no trouble with Black and Huber, 62 62.

The Williamses, who will have a remarkable 24-1 match record for the season going into Doha, were the second team to qualify for the event.

"We are thrilled to be heading to Doha for the Sony Ericsson Championships," Serena Williams said. "I love playing doubles with Venus as we have so much fun on the court. This year we actually decided to put more emphasis on our doubles careers and going to Doha has been on our minds all season. I am thrilled to have an opportunity to compete at the Sony Ericsson Championships in both singles and doubles."
